چکیده

The use of satellite imagery to find, count and monitor whales in remote hard access areas has shown some promise, but few studies have, as yet, provided substantial conservation outcomes. Recent have the ability very high-resolution satellites detect previously surveyed populations belugas narwhals Canada. Here we describe detection a large aggregation poorly population southern Kara Sea, Russia, region where Soviet whaling is known had heavy toll on belugas. We counted over 1,100 surface using imagery. As only an unknown portion can be seen surface, accurately converting abundance estimate will need further study, analog aerial surveys that this between ~1,150–2,870 individuals. Although species not currently considered endangered, concern future trends increasing, reliant Arctic sea ice, which rapidly declining due climate change. This study shows utility discover new little-known cetacean populations.

Immune functions in beluga whales

Natural killer (NK) activity, an important non-specific defense mechanism against viral infections and tumors, was demonstrated in beluga whales using two different methods: “‘Cr release and flow cytometry. Using the “Cr release assay, NK activity in belugas was shown to be higher against K-562 than against YAC-1 cell lines. Moreover, it was enhanced by the addition of human recombinant interle...

Whales from Space: Counting Southern Right Whales by Satellite

We describe a method of identifying and counting whales using very high resolution satellite imagery through the example of southern right whales breeding in part of the Golfo Nuevo, Península Valdés in Argentina. Southern right whales have been extensively hunted over the last 300 years and although numbers have recovered from near extinction in the early 20(th) century, current populations ar...

Zones of impact around icebreakers affecting beluga whales in the Beaufort Sea.

A software model estimating zones of impact on marine mammals around man-made noise [C. Erbe and D. M. Farmer, J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 108, 1327-1331 (2000)] is applied to the case of icebreakers affecting beluga whales in the Beaufort Sea. Two types of noise emitted by the Canadian Coast Guard icebreaker Henry Larsen are analyzed: bubbler system noise and propeller cavitation noise. Effects on bel...

The effect of sea - ice loss on beluga whales ( Delphinapterus leucas ) in

An aerial survey was conducted to estimate the abundance of belugas (Delphinapterus leucas) on their wintering ground in West Greenland in March–April 2006 and 2008. The survey was conducted as a double platform aerial line transect survey, and sampled approximately 17% of the total survey area of ca. 125 000 km. The abundance of belugas was 10 595 (95% confidence interval 4904–24 650). The lar...
